Hanoi (VNA)– The 2020 Law on EnvironmentalProtection, which took effect at the beginning of 2022, hastimely institutionalized many new policies of the Party and State related toenvironmental protection.

The law is also gradually harmonised with international laws with amendments related to environmentalquality management towards protecting people's health.

For the first time,the law defines aresidential community as a subject of environmental protection, which promotesthe role of residential communities in environmental protection activities.

It also comprisesnew regulations on strict control for projects with high risk of adverseenvironmental impacts; post-inspection for projects using advanced andenvironmentally friendly technologies; and cuts many administrative procedures.

In particular, thenew law also adds solutions to protect environmental components, promote wasteseparation at source, and manage and deal with waste.

Many localitiesnationwide have taken initiative in implementing many solutions to protect the environment, and mobilizing the involvement of all-level authorities, people and businesses inthe work.

In the southernprovince of Binh Duong, toward the goal of sustainable socio-economic development, local leaders have oriented industrial development in thedirection of environmental protection.

Since the law wasapproved at the end of 2020, the provincial Department of Natural Resources andEnvironment has actively reviewed regulations to give related consultations to theprovincial People's Committee.

Most industrialparks (IP) in Binh Duong have invested in building separate rainwater andwastewater drainage networks with a total investment of over 2 trillion VND.

Notably, a wastewater treatment plant with a daily capacity of 6000 cu.m wasbuilt in the Singapore Industrial Park II (VSIP II) in the locality.

Binh Duong has prioritizedattracting projects with modern and advanced technologies and restricts newprojects outside IPs and industrial clusters.

It also planned to investin an automatic air quality monitoring system and apply forecasting models, compile pollutionmaps for localities with high urbanization rates; and set up a warning system onair quality on the portal of the provincial natural resources and environmentsector.

The northernprovince of Phu Tho has also actively inspected businesses and production unitsthroughout the locality, in order to guide them in installingautomatic environmental monitoring stations.

According to Nguyen Vinh An, director of the environmental protection sub-departmentof Phu Tho province, the installation of an automatic environmental monitoringsystems helps businesses prove that their emissions to the environment are at an allowable level.

Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seaw🦂ater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

Vietnam ramps up 🧜plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
