OVs in Belgium promote humanitarian ties with homeland

Brussels (VNA) - The Vietnamese community in Belgium has he⛎ld a charity event in Ghent, raising funds to support disadvantaged children in Vietnam.

The event, hosted by the group Friends of Vietnamese Kids, has become an annual tradition over the past decade, initiated by Nguyen Chung Thuy from Bac Giang and her Belgian husband Rudy Moneyn. Taking place at Sint-Paulus School, the gathering recreated a vibrant Vietnamese cultural space with traditional food, music, and traditional long dress performances. Volunteers, both Vietnamese and Belgian, contributed to the warm atmosphere and fundraising activities. Handcrafted items, Vietnamese tea and coffee, and homegrown herbs were sold to generate donations.
This year’s proceeds will support educational projects in Bac Ninh province, and Lam Dong provinces. According to Thuy, all donations go directly to the intended beneficiaries, with her family personally overseeing the delivery and implementation of projects, such as building libraries and providing school supplies.
The event received strong backing from the Vietnamese General Association in Belgium, the Belgium-Vietnam Alliance (BVA), and Happiness Station. BVA President and First Vice President of the Belgian Senate, Andries Gryffroy, praised the event as a meaningful bridge between cultures, fostering understanding and support for humanitarian initiatives in Vietnam. The gathering, the fifth of its kind, reflects a growing community spirit where kindness transcends borders, connecting Belgians and Vietnamese in a shared mission of compassion./.
