Philippines raises volcano alert level in southeast of Manila

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on October 25 raised the alert level over Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon province, southeast of Manila, after recording 121 volcanic earthquakes since October 14.
Hanoi (VNA) - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology andSeismology on October 25 raised the alert level over Bulusan Volcano inSorsogon province, southeast of Manila, after recording 121 volcanicearthquakes since October 14.

The level was raised from zero to 1, which means the volcano is currently in astate of low-level unrest.

Of the121 volcanic earthquakes, the institute said 37 were volcano-tectonicearthquakes associated with rock fracturing processes at the depths of 1 - 9kmbeneath the northwestern and southeastern slopes of the mountain.

Theinstitute warned people to stay away from a 4km radius of the danger zone. Italso urged vigilance in the 2km extended danger zone in the southeast due tothe increased possibilities of sudden and hazardous phreatic eruptions.

Bulusan Volcanois 70km southeast of Mayon Volcano, the most active one in the Philippines, inAlbay province. Mayon has been quietly erupting since June this year and continuesto be on Alert Level 3 on a scale of five, with a "potential explosiveactivity"./.
