The Ministry of Transport and the People's Committee in Kien Giangprovince have approved the feasibility report and proposal for buildingan international passenger port on Phu Quoc Island.

The projectis estimated to have an investment capital of 1.56 trillion VND (73.24million USD). It will be divided into two phases and will be constructedon a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis.

The port'sconstruction will allow international tourism vessels with atransportation capacity of 5,000 to 6,000 passengers and a gross tonnageof 225,000GT to dock at the port. It will also be able to receive cargovessels and military vessels, which will boost socio-economicdevelopment and ensure national defence and security.

Accordingto the Portcoast which has handled the project's planning, the island islocated on the sailing route of 19 sea vessel firms operating along theSingapore-Thailand-Vietnam and north Asia countries' sea routes.

However, the island has no port to receive high-tonnage vessels, which forcesinternational ships to transport their passengers by smaller ships fromthe sea to the shore, causing inconvenience and difficulty and alsoendangers the safety of passengers.

It has been predicted that105,000 to 190,000 passengers will visit Phu Quoc annually via the searoute by 2020 and 350,000 to 550,000 are expected by 2030.

PhuQuoc is an island district with the largest area and highest population, compared with other island districts of Vietnam. It has conditions thatare amenable in terms of geography, climate, nature, society, as wellas economy, for the development of a sea economy, especially diversifiedtourism services, contributing to socio-economic development in the CuuLong (Mekong) Delta and the country.

In the master developmentplan approved by the Prime Minister, the island will act as a specialeconomic zone, a centre for high-quality eco-tourism, trade and luxuryservices and will be known as a high-tech area in the region and theworld.-VNA
