The central province of Phu Yen targets a year-on-year decrease of 2-2.5 percent in the impoverished household rate from 2016-2020. The figures were released during a conference on August 25, setting poverty reduction tasks under the National Target Programme on poverty reduction. In order to realise the target, specific plans will be designed focusing on areas with high volumes of impoverished households and ethnic minority groups. Preferential loans will be offered in tandem with vocational training services in an effort to ensure sustainable poverty reduction.
Localities need to facilitate access to social welfare for those in need, especially social services like education, healthcare and housing. Additionally, poverty reduction should be integrated into other local socio-economic development programmes, such as new style rural area building and assistance for the most disadvantaged areas. The provincial chapter of the Vietnam Fatherland Front has been encouraged to work with relevant bodies to mobilise different resources for poverty reduction, job placement, housing and other social welfare benefits. Between 2011 and 2015, hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged individuals in the province accessed preferential loans exceeding 2.26 trillion VND (nearly 99.5 million USD).
Health insurance coverage has also reached more than 837,000 local residents, worth more than 384 billion VND (16.9 million USD). Nearly 180 billion VND (7.92 million USD) has also been spent on supporting students and households with tuition fees, building houses and participating in vocational training. As a result, more than 37,600 households have been lifted above the poverty line and the impoverished household rate of the province has fallen to 7.72 percent. Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Tran Quang Nhat urged localities to strengthen supervision and monitoring in order to ensure effective implementation of poverty reduction projects.
On the occasion, a number of units and individuals were honoured for their outstanding contributions to poverty reduction from 2011-2015.-VNA
