Hanoi (VNA) - The pinpeat orchestra is considered a valuable assetof the Khmer people in the southern province of Binh Phuoc in particular, aswell as those in the southern region more generally. However, the piece of musicalheritage is on the edge of falling into oblivion.
A pinpeat orchestra isessentially made up of a Cambodian musical band playing traditional Khmer musicon traditional Khmer instruments.
In more modern times, not many people know how to play these kinds ofinstruments, particularly amongst younger generations.
In an attempt to preserve the traditional Khmer music, Loc Ninh district’s EthnicBoarding High School and Secondary School has equipped itself with pinpeat orchestra instruments, and has hired artisans to teach the music to its students.
Over the past four years, the school’s 20-member musical band has maintained aregularly attended practice session after scheduled classes.
This activity has helped the students become more familiar with theinstruments, thus contributing to conserving the traditional values of Khmerpeople. – VNA
