PM Dung praises Japanese former PM’s contributions

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung hailed the contributions of former Japanese Prime Minister Hatoyama Yukio to the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Japan.

Welcoming his guest onSeptember 14 in Hanoi, PM Dung thanked Hatoyama for his donation of 50wheelchairs to children with Agent Orange/Dioxin (AO) disabilities atthe opening ceremony of the Vietnam-Japan clinic in Hanoi.

He highly valued Hatoyama’s efforts to boost bilateral ties as PrimeMinister, as well as in his current position as a member of the Japaneseparliament and President of the Japan-Vietnam ParliamentariansAlliance.

On his part, Hatoyama said he was keen tocooperate with Vietnam to provide humanitarian assistance for childrenAO child victims.

He proposed the VietnameseGovernment ask its Japanese counterpart to include AO victim support inits ODA provision programme, whilst acknowledging that Japan was capableof helping Vietnam detoxify its environment and provide surgery forchildren suffering from exposure to the toxin.

Healso pointed to the need for both sides to enhance their partnership onvocational training and agricultural development.

Hepledged to encourage Japanese localities to work with Vietnameseprovinces on high-tech agriculture, especially in rice production andaquaculture.

Acknowledging Hatoyama’s ideas, PM Dung said Vietnam would ask for Japan’s help in overcoming the consequences of AO.

With regard to regional and international issues, Hatoyama expressedhis opinion to settle peacefully disputes in the region, especially inthe East Sea and the East China Sea, in accordance with internationallaw, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,without the use or threat of force.

On theoccasion, PM Dung spoke of the upcoming performance of TokyoOrchestra, in which Hatoyama’s son Hatoyama Kiichiro plays, saying thissignificant event will promote cultural exchange and mutualunderstanding between the two peoples.-VNA
