HCM City (VNA) - Binh Dan Hospital in HCM City’s District 3 hasput into operation a robotic surgery facility, the first of its kind in Vietnam. Ten adult patients received roboticsurgery at the hospital as of December 10. Director of the hospital Dr Tran VinhHung said that the hospital started to use robots to assist its doctors toperform surgeries among adult patients in November this year in order toimprove quality and reduce the number of Vietnamese patients going overseas forexamination and treatment. The hospital is suggesting that theMinistry of Health approve the advanced technology in the list of insurancecovered medical techniques. It is providing free surgery to the first40 patients, Hung said. At the hospital, the robotic surgeryis performed for cancers of the stomach, colon/rectum, liver, pancreas, lung,prostate, and eight other diseases. Robots have been used to assistlaparoscopic surgery in many countries in the world, such as the US, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, since 1980.-VNA
