Scientists complete collection of sea creature specimens in southern Vietnam
Scientists from the Institute of Oceanography under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology have completed a collection of more than 20,000 specimens of sea creatures, with many new creatures discovered for the first time in Vietnamese waters or entirely new species.

This is the result of the component project “Developing acollection of marine creature specimens in the South of Vietnam” of theNational Project on Building a National Collection of Natural CreatureSpecimens.
Deputy Director of the Institute of Oceanography Hoang XuanBen, who is responsible for directing the project, said that this is alarge-scale and long-lasting project.
The project aims to obtain a set of specimens of about 50percent of all marine species in the southern region for display and researchthat meet the standards of the Vietnam National Museum of Nature, andcontribute to completing the collection of marine specimens of the nationalcollection of natural specimens for research and display.
It also targets improving the research capacity and the skill of classifying sea creatures to support researchon biodiversity to serve conservation and education on marine environment./.
The Management Board of Ly Son Marine Protected Area (MPA) has proposed a gene protection programme for five endangered sea creatures, namely mummy fish, or sea cucumber (holothurian nobilis), abalone (haliotis sorenseni), tropical rock lobster (panulirus ornatus), maxima clam (tridacna maxima) and red seaweed (laurencia intermedia), which have been over-fished in waters off the island.
The rare Annamite striped rabbit has been found in Bidoup- Nui Ba National Park (Bidoup NP), located just 20km from Da Lat city, the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong.
