Seminar discusses social media bullying among students

Hanoi (VNA) – A seminar was held in Hanoi on January 2 toprevent and intervene in social media bullying among students by the Universityof Education – Vietnam National University (VNU – UED).
Participants assessed cyber-bullying among teenagers in the world and Vietnamand introduced some programmes and strategies on preventing online cyber-bullying.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Nam from the VNU-UED said that online bullyingincludes sending, posting or sharing negative, harmful or false content aboutsomeone via digital devices, causing embarrassment or humiliation.
According to a latest research of experts from the VNU – UED, 30.6 percent ofVietnamese secondary students are victims of at least one kind of cyber-bullingin two times or more, while 26.7 percent bully others two times or more.
Nam said that the vast majority of bullies are victims themselves, and studentshave various responses to bullying but they rarely tell the stories to theirparents or teachers.
At the seminar, experts introduced ten programmes and strategies to preventcyber bullying in Australia, the US, Spain, Finland, Germany and Italy, withmain contents of raising students’ awareness of their rights andresponsibilities when joining the Internet, and improving teachers’ capacity inthe field.
In Vietnam, a research group of the VNU-UED has piloted a preventive programmefor secondary school students.
Dr Tran Van Cong said that the programme is designed for children aging 11-18to reduce the rate of online bullying by equipping them with necessary skillsto protect themselves from bullying and use internet safely, and raiseawareness of students, teachers and parents of the matter.-VNA
Women make up about half of the world’s population and contribute to society’s well-being as well as the economy, said Assoc. Prof. and Dr Truong Thi Nam Thang, Director of the Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurships at the National Economics University.
Relevant organisations and agencies should join hands to create a safe internet environment for children, said Deputy Minister of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Hong Lan.
VietNEST (Vietnamese Nurturing Education for Science & Traditions) is a mobile app and digital platform for Vietnamese language learning among overseas children.
The networks bring together universities, research institutes and domestic and foreign businesses. Members will work closely in training, research, and technology transfer by sharing curricula, improving faculty capacity, providing access to laboratories and research facilities, and jointly implementing science and technology projects.

Under the theme “Breakthrough Era with the Development of Industrial Internet”, the event gathered over 400 delegates, including senior officials, leading Internet experts, and technology engineers from Vietnam and abroad.
