Hanoi (VNA) –
The Government ofSingapore has taken a number of tough measures to reduce the use of automobilesand traffic jam.

The country has applied road tolls, massivespending on public transport, and a licence fee that bumps the cost of anaverage vehicle to 80,000 USD.

The main tool is the certificate of entitlementor COE. The current cost of a COE is almost 50,000 SGD (37,000 USD). Thecertificates are valid for 10 years, after that the car will be scrapped or thecertificate must be renewed.

Other key measures include controlling thenumber of vehicles on the roads and charging tolls on main roads at busy times.

The Singapore’s Government recently announced aplan to spend 28 billion SGD upgrading its public transport network includingsubways, trains and buses.-VNA
