Singapore (VNA) – The Elections Department (ELD)of Singapore recently announced that the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee(EBRC) was set up.

Its formation is a clear sign that Singapore’s generalelection, which must be held by April 2021, is near.

The EBRC has been directed to review the boundaries of thecurrent electoral divisions and to recommend the number and boundaries of GroupRepresentation Constituencies (GRCs) and Single Member Constituencies (SMCs),considering significant changes in the number of electors in the currentelectoral divisions as a result of population shifts and housing developments.

It will also look into further reducing the average size ofthe GRCs, which currently numbers 16, and to increase the number of SMCs fromthe current 13.

Analysts predicted that Singapore’s general election may takeplace in December, while some others said it could be held in April or May nextyear after the country’s national budget is unveiled.

In Singapore’s previous elections, a general election could be called from between two and sevenmonths from the time the EBRC'sformation is announced.

This is the first time that the ELD has officially announcedthe establishment of the EBRC. The announcement was made by ministers beforethe parliament in 2006 and 2015 elections, and by PM Lee when speaking withreporters in 2011.-VNA
