Thailand’s general election planned for early 2016 will be delayed until August at the earliest, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam announced on May 19.

The country will convene areferendum in January 2016 and spend 3-4 months amending various laws,he said, adding that the election will be held within no more thansubsequent 90 days.

Earlier the same day, Thai PrimeMinister Prayuth Chan-ocha said the cabinet has agreed to conduct areferendum on the new constitution and the military’s democracyrestoration blueprint.

The progress of the return to democracy is forecast to be slower as a result of the three-month referendum, he conceded.-VNA
