Bangkok (VNA) – Shops in Thailand’s southwestern province ofPhetchaburi on August 7 blocked doors with sandbags and bricks to brace forflooding over fears that a dam in the area could overflow.

Local media also show residents in Phetchaburi, 168km fromBangkok, laying bricks outside shops and buffering entrances to banks with sandbags.

Thailand is in the middle of its rainy season which oftensees downpours. The Meteorological Department said more downpours are expectedbetween August 7-9.

Officials said they are confident that water levels at theKaeng Krachan Dam and any water run-off can be managed.

Four districts could be affected, said Interior MinisterAnupong Paochinda, adding that local authorities are preparing sandbags andwater pumps.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is due to visit Phetchaburion August 8.

Thailand suffered its worst floods in half a century in2011. The floods killed more than 900 people as well as affected production andeconomic growth of the country.-VNA

Thai Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Vuttikrai Leewiraphan Thailand's formal proposal will be substantial enough for the US to consider further detailed negotiations.
