Thousands of people in Viet Nam pick up trash at the World Cleanup Day

In 2018, the World Cleanup Day in Viet Nam attracted 1,300 participants who collected 10 tonnes of trash. Ha Noi drew the participation of 639 volunteers who collected 3 tonnes of rubbish.
More than 1,000 volunteers took part in the World Cleanup Day held in Ha Noi on September 21, cleaning many “hot” spots of trash in the capital city. Specifically, the volunteers picked up trash at Nguyen Trai Street, Long Bien Bridge, Thong Nhat Park, Pham Hung Street and some other places. Besides, the organising board plans to organise information dissemination and garbage collection campaigns at different wards in the city in order to spread the love and responsibility for the environment.
The World Cleanup Day was initiated by the Let’s Do It World Organisation with the aim of mobilising 5 percent of the world population to clean up trash in one day. World Cleanup Day has attracted 17.8 million volunteers from 158 countries so far. In 2018, the World Cleanup Day in Viet Nam attracted 1,300 participants who collected 10 tonnes of trash. Ha Noi drew the participation of 639 volunteers who collected 3 tonnes of rubbish. At present, Viet Nam is one of countries with the highest population density. It is the 14th most populous countries in the world and the third most populous countries in the Southeast Asia.
It is accompanied by environmental population when the population keeps rising rapidly and untreated waste is discharged into the environment. By 2015, the whole country recorded 44 million tonnes of rubbish. On average, each Vietnamese citizen discharges 200kg of trash a year. Urban areas account for over 25 per cent of the population but make up over 50 per cent of the total amount of rubbish discharged each year. In Ha Noi, 6,500 tonnes of household rubbish are discharged each day, of which around 30 per cent are not collected and treated. So activities to call on the community to clean up trash such as the World Cleanup Day have great meaning because they would not help to clean the environment but also to raise public awareness./.
