Timber, wooden furniture exports rake in 7.3 billion USD

Nguyen BaNgai, Deputy Head of the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, said the exportvalue of wooden furniture and other forestry products increased by between 5-10percent. Wood chipremained a key staple in 2016, with China being the biggest importer of theproduct from Vietnam. Vietnam’swood chip is currently facing fiercer competition from the similar product of Thailand,Australia and African countries. To improvethe quality and ensure the supply of materials, Vietnam has increased forestareas. Accordingto the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, the country’s total area of timberforests now exceeds 127,700 hectares.-VNA
The year 2015 is providing a golden opportunity for Vietnam’s wood exporters to boost their global exports, according to the Handicrafts and Wood Industry Association of Ho Chi Minh City (HAWA).
Vietnam’s wood sector pocketed 425 million USD from exports to China in the first half of this year, ranking second among Vietnamese exports to China behind cassava.
The export revenue of timber and woodwork products is projected to reach 7.4 billion USD, 200 million USD less than the target set for the sector this year.
