Top singers to perform in Liberation Day concert

Ta Minh Tam, Vietnam's premier tenor, will sing the country's most popular war-era songs during a concert at HCM City Opera House on April 24 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the liberation of southern Vietnam.

Accompanied by the city's symphony orchestra, Tam and femaleperformers Anh Tuyet, Ngoc Mai and Ha Tram will sing popular tunes fromthe era, including Ca Ngoi Ho Chu Tich (Praising President Ho) and SongLo (The Lo River) by Van Cao; and La Do (Red Leaves) by Hoang Hiep.

Well-known romantic songs written during the war like Huy Du's TrenDinh Truong Son Ta Hat (We Sing on Top of the Truong Son Mountain Range)and Hoang Viet's Tinh Ca (Love Song) will also be featured.

Tam and Korean opera singer Choe Hae-ryong will sing the popularheroic love song Truong Son Dong, Truong Son Tay (Eastern and WesternSides of the Truong Son Mountain Range), by Hoang Hiep.

Choe, who teaches at the vocal department of HCM City 'sConservatory of Music, is also a member of the city's Ballet andSymphony Orchestra.

Tam received a master's degree with honours in vocal studies from theHCM City Conservatory of Music in 1986.

He has captured many national and international awards. In 1985, hewon the first prize at Vietnam 's National Professional SingersFestival, and in 1996, he earned the title of The Golden Voice of ASEANand, in 1997, he won the Gold Cup at the Pyongyang International MusicFestival.

The 50-year-old singer has been recognised by the Government as aMeritorious Artist.

Tam, who is head of the vocal department at the conservatory, has beenperforming professionally for more than 30 years. He is one of a fewsingers in the country who have found success in films.

Tickets for the 8pm concert range from 300,000VND to 500,000 VND(15-25 USD) and are available at the Opera House, 7 Lam Son Square,district 1, and at the Conservatory of Music, 112 Nguyen Du street,district 1.

A part of the proceeds from the concert will be used to build twocharity houses for the poor and will be donated to the Vu A DinhScholarship Foundation./.
