Translation of book on geography under Nguyen Dynasty tops National Book Awards

A revised translation of "Hoang Viet nhat thong du dia chi", considered the first collection of geographical descriptions under the Nguyen Dynasty, has won the A prize of the 5th National Book Awards.

Hanoi (VNA) – A revised translation of "HoangViet nhat thong du dia chi", considered the first collection of geographicaldescriptions under the Nguyen Dynasty, has won the A prize of the 5th NationalBook Awards.

The book was written by the then defence chief Le Quang Dinhwhen King Gia Long was just crowned and was in the process of organising andstabilising the imperial court after several centuries of conflicts.

Thewinning edition was translated and annotated by Phan Dang and published by the TheGioi Publishers and Thaihabooks.

The A prize, also the highest one worth 100 million VND (4,186USD), was announced at the award ceremony held in Hanoi on October 3 evening.

Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Damlauded the role of book authors, translators, and publishers, and hoped thenational award will also become a destination for books written and published overseasin the long run.

This year’s awards saw the participation of 298 books andbook collections from 48 out of 57 Vietnamese publishers.

In addition to the top prize, there were nine B prizes worth50 million VND each and 16 C prizes worth 30 million VND each.

Held annually since 2004, the National Book Awards hasbecome a prestigious event of the publishing industry, honouring the value ofbooks, authors and publishers throughout the country. It is an opportunity forpublishers to look back on their achievements over a year and for readersacross the country to gain more knowledge about books and the publishingindustry./.
