Uber Vietnam allowed to pilot e-cab service

The Ministry of Transport has approved Uber Vietnam’s pilot project on applying technology in the management and connection of under-contract passenger transportation.

- The Ministry of Transport has approved Uber Vietnam’s pilotproject on applying technology in the management and connection ofunder-contract passenger transportation.

Stressingthe potential of car hailing services in Vietnam, Uber Vietnam executivedirector Dang Viet Dung said the permission encourages his firm to continuerenovating technologies, and bring conveniences and benefits to users and driversin major cities across the country.

Arepresentative from the Ministry of Transport said the company has completed requirementsfrom the ministry for its pilot project, but still needs to get approval fromlocal authorities where the company has registered its operation.
Previously,the ministry had twice rejected the Uber project, first in 2015 as the companyhad not founded an appropriate legal entity in Vietnam and second in February2017 because the project was not in compliance with established laws.

Thepiloted-hailing service of Uber’s rival in Vietnam, Grab, was approved earlierthis year.

Uberand Grab are the only two foreign firms registering for pilot e-hailingprojects apart from local taxi companies, includingVinasun Taxi, Thanh Cong Taxi and Sun Taxi.-VNA
