UN office eager to increase links with Vietnamese police

The United Nations Office on Drug and Crimes (UNODC) wants to further strengthen cooperation with the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security to control trans-border drug trafficking and combat crimes, especially newly emerging ones.

UN Under-Secretary-Generaland UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov made the statement at ameeting with Deputy Minister of Public Security, Lieutenant General PhamQuy Ngo in Hanoi on December 4.

Fedotovpledged to assist Vietnam to implement the 2012 – 2015 Action Planon Drug, Crimes and Human Trafficking Prevention.

Ngo informed Fedotov of Vietnam’s significant achievements in reducingcrime. The accomplishments are attributed to the police and the whole ofsociety through nationwide campaigns to safeguard public security andorder – contributing to national security and socio-economicdevelopment, he added.

He said that theVietnamese State is focusing its efforts on combating socio-economicissues including poverty, the completion of the legal framework,criminal investigations and dealing cases of crime.

The ministry has actively strengthened international cooperation withcountries in the region and organisations in the world to combat crime,Ngo stressed./.VNA
