Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Van Tung is leading adelegation to the 54th series of meetings of the Assemblies of theMember States of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO),which kicked off in Geneva, Switzerland on September 22.
In his opening speech, WIPO Director General Francis Gurry attributedthe organisation’s strong financial health to steady growth in theglobal intellectual property systems such as the Patent CooperationTreaty, the Madrid System for trademarks and the Hague System fordesigns.
He pledged to continue bringing intoplay achievements gained over the past six years in WIPO’s coreprogrammes, including global intellectual property services,policy-making, capacity building and technical infrastructure.
The director general also stressed the need for quick ratificationsof international treaties to convert commitments into reality.
The Vietnamese official is scheduled to deliver a speech at the eventand meet with Gurry to share Vietnam’s stances on building theworld intellectual property system in the time ahead.
WIPO isthe global forum for the promotion of intellectual property (IP)policy, services, information and cooperation. As a specialised agencyof the United Nations, WIPO assists its 187 member states in developing abalanced international IP legal framework to meet society’s evolvingneeds.
It provides business services for obtaining IP rights inmultiple countries and resolving disputes, as well as deliverscapacity-building programmes to help developing countries benefit fromusing IP, and provides free access to unique knowledge banks of IPinformation.
