Vietnam highlights ASEAN’s efforts to observe child rights

Hanoi (VNA) –Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the UnitedNations, has affirmed the ASEAN’s strong commitments in promoting and ensuringthe rights of children in both regional and global scales through dialogue,partnership and cooperation, helping to build a future of peace, stability andprosperity.

The diplomat represented the Associationof Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to address a ceremony in New York onNovember 20 (local time) to mark the 30th anniversary of the UNConvention on the Rights of the Child, which drew representatives from 193 UNmember countries, UN agencies, UNICEF as well as activists in the field of childrights.

Quy said that the ASEAN hasexerted efforts to build a favourable development environment for children andadolescents through many cooperation programmes such as the regional actionplan on the elimination of violence against children, and the ASEAN ChildrenForum.

The UN Convention on the Rightsof the Child was adopted on November 20, 1989, becoming the first of its kindapproved, representing the commitments of the international community inrealizing children’s rights to health care, education, nutrition, and safeenvironment without violence, as well as the right to raise their voices andhead to the future.

The ceremony was a chance for themember countries to review outcomes in child right protection over the pastthree decades, while pointing out challenges and seeking specific orientationsand measures to better promote and observe child rights.

Participants also pledged to actfor children, while listening to their voices and protecting the dream of eachchild.

The ASEAN comprises 10 memberstates, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, thePhilippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam./.
