Vietnam, Malaysia bolster defence ties

Hanoi (VNA) -
Deputy Defence Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh held talks with his Malaysian counterpart,Dato' Sri Mohd Johari Baharum, in Hanoi on December 14.

At the meeting, the twosides acknowledged the practical outcomes of the two countries’ defence cooperationbased on agreements reached by the two ministries, including the memorandum ofunderstanding signed in 2008 and the letter of intent inked in 2015.

They agreed to continueimplementing their cooperation commitments, particularly the acceleration ofcompleting a cooperation mechanism in the framework of the high-ranking jointcommittee on defence collaboration and other working groups.

They also reachedconsensus on increasing bilateral consultations on the sideline of multilateralforums in which both countries participate, such as the ASEAN DefenceMinisters’ Meeting (ADMM), ADMM Plus and ASEAN Regional Forum.

These consultations areimportant to help the sides come up with common stances on regional andinternational security issues as well as consolidate solidarity within the ASEANbloc.

Later the same day, theMalaysian deputy minister, who is on an official visit to Vietnam from December14-16, paid a courtesy call on Defence Minister Ngo Xuan Lich.-VNA
