Vietnam pledges to promote gender equality

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Permanent Representative of Vietnam tothe UN was speaking at the general debate on “Advancement of Women” ofthe 69th Session of the General Assembly in New York, spanningOctober 13-15.

She reiterated Vietnam’scommitment to working with the international community to fullyimplement the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on Women andthe Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women(CEDAW) for a better life of all women around the world.

“The promotion of gender equality, women’s rights and womenempowerment is an integral part of Vietnam’s development”, she said.

The diplomat introduced a number of legal documentsthat Vietnam has enacted over the past time, including the Law onGender Equality and the Law against Domestic Violence.

According to Nga, the country has achieved all Millennium DevelopmentGoals (MDGs) related to gender equality, women empowerment and maternalhealth improvement.

The maternal mortality rate hasdropped dramatically from 233 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 64 per100,000 live births in 2012, while sexual and reproductive health andrights of women are better ensured, she noted.-VNA

“I Love My Country” media campaign launched

Running from August 4 to September 2, under the hashtag #TuHaoVietNam, the campaign invites participants in two categories: “I Love My Country” video clips and “I Love My Country” check-in photos.

With a tight 13-month deadline, the move is under a strategic and urgent policy to bridge educational gaps, train the local workforce, and shore up territorial sovereignty in some of the country’s most remote areas.
