Vietnam promotes cooperation through parliamentary diplomatic channel

Hanoi (VNA) – Head of theVietnamese National Assembly Committee for External Relations Nguyen Van Giau talkedthe outcomes of National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan’s recentworking visits to Morocco, France, and the European Parliament, and herparticipation in the 140thInter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Doha, Qatar.

Within the framework of her visits and workingsessions, the NA Chairwoman had high-level talks and meetings withparliamentary leaders and the governments of Morocco and France, Giau toldreporters accompanying the Vietnamese delegation on April 9.

Inmeetings and working sessions in Morocco, the Vietnamese top legislator, andthe government and parliament leaders of Morocco expressed their determination tofurther strengthen multifaceted cooperation, especially in trade, investment,industry, tourism, education, and people-to-people exchange.

Leadersof the two countries’ parliaments agreed that their legislative bodies should maintainNA leaders’ visits to the other country every two years, during whichexperience sharing workshops on specific topics will be held.

Duringthe visit, representatives of several ministries, sectors, and localities ofthe two countries signed cooperation agreements.

In France, NA Chairwoman Ngan and French leaders agreed to further promote thebilateral and parliamentary cooperation, Giau said.

TheFrench side voiced its support for the early signing and ratification of the EuropeanUnion-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and for Vietnam’s views on solvingregional and global issues in the principle of peace, dialogue, and respect forinternational law.

In Belgium, the Vietnamese top legislator had open discussions with leaders ofthe European Parliament (EP), the European Council (EC), and Belgium on issues relatedto the EVFTA and the Investment Protection Agreement (IPA) between Vietnam and theEU.

The EP, EC, and Belgian leaders affirmed that they will do their best topromote the signing and ratification of the two agreements.

Both sides affirmed that they are willing to talk frankly about different viewsso as to reach a common perception, towards fostering cooperation betweenVietnam and the EU in the coming time, Giau said.

Regarding the NA Chairwoman’s participation in the 140th IPU Assembly in Doha, Qatar, Giau said that in her speechat the event, Ngan spoke highly of the role played by the IPU.

She made recommendations on promoting andmaintaining peace for development and perfecting legal framework in parliamentsand building states of the rule of law, Giau noted, adding that the Vietnameselegislator also suggested that the IPU press ahead with reforms to raise theefficiency and role of its member parliaments in carrying out adoptedresolutions.

On the sidelines of the 140th IPU Assembly, NA Chairwoman Ngan met with speakersof parliaments from Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, and Georgia; as wellas the Vice Chairwoman of the China National People’s Congress (NPC) StandingCommittee, the President and General Secretary of IPU.-VNA
