Vietnam supports the expanded and increased role of the United Nations (UN) and multilateral security mechanisms in ensuring regional and global security, peace, and stability, said Deputy Chief of Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army Vo Van Tuan at the fourth Moscow Conference on International Security (MCIS) in the Russian capital city on April 16-17.

At a discussion on the role ofpolitical-military policies in regional and global security, LieutenantGeneral Tuan said growing non-traditional security challenges arethreatening security and stability unsolvable by any one nation alone.

Political-military strategies are essential tomitigate disagreements and conflicts and promote cooperation inaddressing shared security matters, he added.

Theuse of military interference needs approval through the UN and theinternational community. Vietnam adamantly protests unilateral militaryinterference in sovereign nations under any pretense, the officerstressed.

At the annual conference, participantsalso discussed international defence cooperation in the fight againstterrorism, the current situation in Afghanistan, and measures to combatthe self-proclaimed Islamic State.

The event drewthe special attention of the public and the participation of seniorRussian officials, including Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, ForeignMinister Sergey Lavrov, and General Valery Gerasimov – Chief of theGeneral Staff of Russia’s Armed Forces and First Deputy DefenceMinister.

At the MCIS’s plenary session in themorning of April 16, speeches from the Russian delegates analysedimminent threats to global security and proposed possible cooperationareas to cope with these risks.

The DefenceMinisters of participating countries—Belarus, Greek, China, theDemocratic People’s Republic of Korea, Pakistan, and Iran—also spoke atthe session.-VNA
