Vietnam, US sign MoU to boost defence ties

Vietnam’s Defence Ministry and the US Department of Defence signed a MoU regarding UN peacekeeping.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Defence and the United States Department ofDefence signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on July 7 regardingUnited Nations peacekeeping.

The MoU was signedby Deputy Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinhand David Shear, Assistant Secretary of Defence for Asian and PacificSecurity Affairs.

The MoU aims to promotebilateral defence ties within the realm of peacekeeping activitiesorganised by the United Nations such as increasing exchanges and sharingexperiences and skills in UN missions.

The MoUalso includes building the capacity of individuals and units in trainingfor missions, providing equipment to peacekeeping forces, disbursingprojects on building the Vietnam Peacekeeping Centre and improvingEnglish language competency.

Addressing theevent, Deputy Defence Minister Vinh said the signing of the MoU broughtthe Vietnam-US defence relationship to a new height, as both countriespledged for peace and stability and with the joint responsibility ofbeing responsible members of the UN.

The MoU isone of four documents signed on July 7 in Washington D.C. after historictalks at the White House between Party General Secretary Nguyen PhuTrong and President Barack Obama.

Vinh also metwith Tim Rieser, an aide to Senator Patrick Leahy, to discuss resolvingpost-war consequences; Herve Ladsuos, the United NationsUnder-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, on preparations forthe level 2 field hospital and engineer company taking part in UNpeacekeeping; and with leader of the UN Mine Action Agency.-VNA
