Vietnam wins two int’l science and engineering awards

Twelve Vietnamese high-school students who entered the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2015 (Intel ISEF) in the United States arrived back in Vietnam on May 19, bringing with them two awards.

A project proposing ways in which toimprove the quality and yield of shrimp, penned by two students fromthe High School for Gifted Students at the Hanoi University ofScience, won the fourth-place award in the competition’s Microbiologycategory.

The American PsychologicalAssociation awarded students of Lam Son High School for theGifted in central Thanh Hoa province with the third place prize fortheir project “ Intranasal Insulin Enhances Spatial Memory andCognitive Adjustment”.

Vietnam is among 36 countries and territories worldwide whose students have received awards this year.

The Intel ISEF, a programme run by the Society for Science & thePublic (SSP), is the world’s largest international pre-college sciencecompetition.

Millions of students worldwide compete each yearin local and school-sponsored science fairs; the winners of these eventsgo on to participate in SSP-affiliated regional and state fairs fromwhich the best win the opportunity to attend Intel ISEF.

IntelISEF unites these top young scientific minds, showcasing their talent onan international stage, where doctoral level scientists review andjudge their work.

Held from May 9-15, this year’s competitionbrought together more than 1,700 high-school students from 76 countriesand territories across the globe.-VNA

The PM revealed Vietnam’s plan to develop nuclear power in the near future, and called on the Swedish side to assist Vietnam in developing and refining legal and policy frameworks for the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes; training and developing human resources; ensuring nuclear safety; and conducting training and drills to improve incident management capabilities.
