Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman visits Museum of Black Civilisations in Dakar

Dakar (VNA) - National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, accompanied by his spouse Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, toured the Museum of Black Civilisations in Dakar on the morning of July 24 (local time) as part of their ongoing official visit to Senegal.
Joining the visit were President of the Senegalese National Assembly El Malick Ndiaye and Vice Presidents.
The Museum of Black Civilisations is Senegal’s national museum, officially inaugurated in December 2018 to showcase Africa’s contributions to global cultural and scientific heritage.
Its establishment was first envisioned by Léopold Sédar Senghor, Senegal’s founding President, during the 1966 World Festival of Black Arts. In 2009, then-President Abdoulaye Wade proposed the museum’s construction, which commenced in 2013.

Covering 13,785 square metres, the museum features a four-storey circular building inspired by traditional impluvium huts. It houses exhibition halls, a conference room, a 150-seat auditorium, and creative and multifunctional spaces.
The museum currently displays around 18,000 artefacts, including historical objects and contemporary works. A prominent feature in the main entrance is a large baobab tree sculpture by Haitian artist Edouard Duval-Carrié. The museum is also working with several European partners to locate and repatriate Senegalese artefacts.

Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man had a meeting in Dakar on July 23 afternoon (local time) with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who affirmed that the first visit by a key Vietnamese leader since the establishment of diplomatic ties marks an important milestone in further promoting the good relationship between the two countries.
Over the past 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations on December 29, 1969, Vietnam and Senegal have maintained a strong and friendly relationship, actively supporting each other at regional and international forums. The official visit to Senegal by National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man marks an important milestone, creating momentum to strengthen cooperation between the two legislative bodies and opening up new prospects in various fields such as trade, agriculture, science and technology, and people-to-people exchanges.
The agreement outlines a framework for enhanced parliamentary collaboration, focusing on the exchange of high-level delegations and contacts, the sharing of parliamentary experiences, mutual support at multilateral parliamentary forums, the building and rollout of cooperation initiatives.
The size of the economy increased from over 5 billion USD in 1986 to over 476 billion USD by 2024, making Vietnam the fourth-largest economy in Southeast Asia and the 34th largest in the world.
