Vietnamese travelers abroad still prefer cash: survey

Vietnam’s outbound tourists, who still prefer paying in cash, could surpass the number of Thailand's in the next decade, according to a report from the tourism consulting firm Outbox Consulting.

- Vietnam’s outbound tourists, who still prefer paying incash, could surpass the number of Thailand's in the next decade,according to a report from the tourism consulting firm Outbox Consulting.

The report titled“Vietnam Outbound Travel Trends 2019” found that Asia remained the most visitedoutbound destinations by Vietnamese travelers.

The reports saidthat Vietnamese travelers preferred to make cash payments rather thancashless transactions, with 60.4 percent of polled travelers using the USdollar or foreign currencies at destinations abroad.

Morethan 50 percent of Vietnamese travelers said they paid by creditcards when traveling abroad.

A Vietnamese traveleron a tour package spent around 10-20 million VND (430-861 USD) foreach overseas trip, while spending of Vietnamese independent travelers wasestimated at 5-10 million VND (215-430 USD) for each overseas trip.

Some 52 percent ofVietnamese tourists are independent travelers who design their ownitineraries and arrange their own travel plans, while 38 percentbuy group tour packages. Only 10 percent of Vietnamese touriststravel abroad on tailored tours.

The survey polledaround 1,053 Vietnamese people aged 20-50 who had traveled abroad in thepast 12 months.

The survey citedASEAN travel statistics that said the number of outbound trips from Vietnamrose to 8.6 million last year from 4.8 million in 2012.

The rapid growth wasseen as a result of various socio-economic factors, especially the growthof the middle class with incomes of 15 million VND (646 USD) per month ormore.

Inaddition, nearly 60 percent of Vietnamese under 35 years old, withbetter education and income than those from previous generations, were alsocontributing to tourism growth abroad.-VNS/VNA
