VN, Laos boost archives management cooperation

The State Records Management and Archives Department of Vietnam and the National Archives Department of Laos have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on their cooperation plan in 2013.
The State Records Management and Archives Department of Vietnam and theNational Archives Department of Laos have signed a Memorandum ofUnderstanding (MOU) on their cooperation plan in 2013.

The signing of the MOU on October 24 in Vientiane is a part ofa host of activities to respond to the Vietnam-Laos Friendship andSolidarity Year 2012.

Under the document, the twodepartments will jointly establish and exchange archives indexesrelating to history of Vietnam and Laos.

The two sideswill continue sharing experience in archives and records management viaexchanges of documents and experts at jointly-held conferences andsymposiums.

In addition, Vietnam’s Ministry ofEducation and Training will provide long and short-term training coursesto the staff of the Lao archives agency.

The ministry willoffer assistance under the form of non-refundable aid of the Vietnamesegovernment to help Laos carry out a project on a national archiveinsurance center located at the northern Luang Prabang province.

In the past years, the two agencies, as members of the InternationalCouncil on Archives and its branch in Southeast Asia, have been closelycoordinating at the regional and international forums.-VNA

Death penalty for eight criminal offenses li🅘fted

The new law abolishes the death penalty for eight criminal offenses: the crime aimed at overthrowing the people’s government; the crime of sabotaging state infrastructure and technical facilities; the crime of producing and trading counterfeit medicines for treatment and prevention; the crime of destroying peace and causing aggressive war; the crime of espionage; that of illegally transporting narcotics; embezzlement; and bribe taking.

Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu stressed the need to enhance the performance of institutions established under the Convention, thereby reinforcing the role and vitality of UNCLOS, referred to as the “Constitution for the Oceans,” in maintaining maritime order, conserving and sustainably utilising marine resources, and contributing to global peace, stability, and sustainable development.
