Hanoi (VNA) – The election of Vietnamese Ambassador to Kuwait Nguyen Hong Thao to the UN International Law Commission (ILC) demonstrates the increasing position oꦺ𝔍f Vietnam in the global arena and the country’s active contributions to the international community.

Thao ran for a seat among seven assigned for the Asian-Pacific region at the ILC.
The ambassador said he will actively engage in the commission’s discussions on such topics as protecting people from natural disasters, protecting the environment during armed conflicts, the temporary application of international treaties, and identifying international practices. With nearly 40-year’s experience in legal and diplomatic affairs, particularly in international public law, laws on the environment and sea, and border delimitation, Thao was confident to represent Vietnam and other developing countries at the ILC.
This is the first time a Vietnamese has been elected to an important agency of the UN, marking a significant step in the country’s international integration and participation in UN legal forums. Established in 1947, the ILC comprises 34 members elected every five years working independently from the countries that nominate them. It specialises in drafting international conventions and studying major issues in international law.-VNA
