WB helps build VN-Germany University in HCM City

The World Bank (WB) has provided 180 million USD in loans to help Vietnam build the Vietnam-Germany University (VGU) in Ho Chi Minh City.

Covering a site of 45 hectares, 40 km from HCM City, the German-standarduniversity will be built at a cost of 200 million USD, of which 20million USD comes from the Vietnamese government. It is expected to becompleted for the 2016-2017 school year.

At a pressbriefing in Germany on July 8, Roland Koch, State Premier of Hessenstate, spoke highly of the WB’s support, considering it as a sign of thequality of the project for which Hessen state is a strategic partner.

The new university will be a landmark to VGU which ison its way to become a leading technological research university in theregion, he said, pledging that Hessen state will send experts to supportthe construction.

Professor Wolf Rieck, VGU’sPresident, stressed that WB’s decision will effectively contribute tothe research work of the university, which was set up in September2008.

Currently VGU has 100 students and that numberwill increase to 230 in the 2010-2011 year. Once the campus iscompleted, VGU is expected to welcome 12,000 students, he added.

VGU is the first international public university in Vietnamand is being founded under an agreement signed between the Vietnam’sMinistry of Education and Training and Hessen state./.
