Workshop talks biosphere conservation

An international workshop took place in Phu Quoc island district of southern Kien Giang province on December 16 to seek measures to conserve and promote the values of Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve.

Co-organised by the provincial People’s Committee and the GermanCooperation Organisation, the workshop focused on the conservation workto serve the sustainable development of the reserve in general and PhuQuoc Island in particular, while making use of the reserve to developeconomics and tourism, and improve the community’s awareness ofprotecting the reserve.

The Kien Giang BiosphereReserve, recognised by UNESCO in October 2006, is the second largestamong Vietnam’s eight biosphere reserves and covers nearly 1.2million hectares.

It is home to many tropicalecological systems such as marine and coastal ones, mangrove swamps,coral reefs, marsh, primary and secondary tropical forests on PhuQuoc Island and forest on Hon Chong karst mountain.

Kien Giang and the Cambodian province of Kampot signed documents onprotecting dugong, and conserving coral reefs and mangrove forestseffectively.-VNA

PM orders strengthened disaster prep𒉰aredness ahead of storm season

Vꦚietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

🥃 Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
