Hanoi (VNA) – Regulationson co-management of aquatic resource protection and management of marineprotected areas in Vietnam were discussed at a workshop in Hanoi on November22.
The Directorate of Fisheries at theMinistry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Centre for MarinelifeConservation and Community Development (MCD) held a national consultationworkshop discussing regulations on co-management of aquatic resource protectionand management of marine protected areas in reference to the revised Law onFisheries that was adopted by the National Assembly on November 21.
The workshop aimed to collectfeedback from attendees to develop guidelines for the enforcement of the lawand enhance information sharing and participation of stakeholders in thematter, said deputy head of the Directorate of Fisheries Tran Dinh Luan
This is the first time the concept of“co-management” has been regulated in the Law on Fisheries, he noted, addingthat it is intended to encourage community participation in management ofaquatic resource protection.
MCD Director Nguyen Thu Hue said sheexpects the workshop will be a good start for the consultation process totranslate the law into reality. The process needs to be promoted in aconsistent fashion with the participation of all stakeholders, she noted.
The workshop saw representatives fromcities and provinces sharing their experience and giving ideas for draftingguidelines for co-management in protecting and developing aquatic resources.The delegates also discussed amendments made in the revised regulations onmanagement of marine protected areas in Vietnam.-VNA
