Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

– General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and State President To Lam attended the opening ceremony of the 2024-2025 academic year of the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Hanoi on September 12.

Over the past 47 years of development, the NDA has played a crucial role in implementing the Party's viewpoints and guidelines, and the State's policies and laws, as well as directions from the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defence; training and developing personnel; providing strategic advice on national defence, security, and military matters, building the armed forces, and combining socio-economic and cultural development with national defence and security. – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on September 12 gave on-site directions in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai on the settlement of the serious consequences of the downpour, landslides, and flooding entailing recent Typhoon Yagi.

The natural phenomena following the super typhoon, which hit Vietnam on September 7, have left 46 people died or missing (mostly due to landslides), 24 others injured, nearly 23,000 houses collapsed, damaged, or inundated, and tens of hectares of crops and aquaculture devastated. Read full story

- The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee opened its 37th session in Hanoi on September 12 under the chair of NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man.

– UNICEF Vietnam has urgently transported 80,000 water purification tablets for the Centre of Disease Control in Thai Nguyen province and 4,000 litres of water to the Lao Cai provincial Hospital to ensure the supply of drinking water for 800 people as part of efforts to help communities affected by typhoon Yagi overcome disaster consequences.

In the coming days, UNICEF will provide water purification tablets, water tanks, ceramic filters, hand sanitisers and soap to households, schools and healthcare facilities in Yen Bai and Lao Cai provinces. Read full story

– The cooperation between Vietnam and Mongolia over the past 70 years as well as orientations to shape up the bilateral relationship in the coming time were highlighted at an international workshop held by the International Cooperation Department under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) on September 12.

In his opening remarks, VASS Vice President Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Duc Minh said that the relations, set up on November 17, 1954, have been consolidated and strongly developed in various areas, stressing they have been supporting each other during their struggle for national independence, renewal, and international integration. – A delegation from the Ministry of National Defence led by Deputy Minister Sen.Lieut.Gen Hoang Xuan Chien is attending the 13th Seoul Defence Dialogue (SDD) from September 10 to 12 at the invitation of the Ministry of National Defence of the Republic of Korea.

The SDD, a large regional and international forum, has been held since 2012 with the participation of high-ranking officials, and defence and security experts and scholars from countries and international organisations. Read full story

- A high-level delegation from the Ministry of Public Security led by Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen. Luong Tam Quang has visited Russia and attended the 14th meeting of BRICS high-ranking officials responsible for security matters in St. Petersburg city.

Speaking at the September 11 event, Quang emphasised that over the past decade, peace and cooperation have remained a major global and regional trend, while multilateralism and globalisation a predominant trend. However, the global and regional situation has experienced significant turbulence, complex and unpredictable developments, and increased instability. Given this context, international security has faced growing challenges and risks, with non-traditional security threats directly affecting all countries.
