Cambodia: No change to NA election’s date

PhnomPenh (VNA) – The National Election Committee (NEC) of Cambodiareaffirmed that the country's 6th mandateNational Assembly (NA) election will be held as scheduled on July 29.

NEC spokesman Hang Puthea said on March 29 that the generalelection will take place on July 29 as scheduled to elect 125 members ofparliament.

The NEC also announced that political parties have 15 days toregister for the national election, starting from April 30 to May 14, 2018.

The announcement was made after the dissolved oppositionparty – the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) continued calling for a delayof the upcoming election until it is restored and can take part in theelection.

According to the Cambodian Ministry of Interior, 37 politicalparties have been officially recognized so far. Many political parties havedeclared to run for the election.

TheNEC suggested the United Nations send observers or set up an office at itsheadquarters to observe the election earlier this month at a working sessionwith the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Rhona Smith.

Rhona Smith asked the NEC to ensure fairness, transparency and honesty in theupcoming elections. However, she has not answered the NEC’s proposal.-VNA
