A ship with a middle-speed engine able to carry 250 passengers and 50 tonnes of goods went into operation in central Binh Thuan province on September 8, expected to meet Phu Quy islanders’ demand for travelling to the mainland. The mid-speed ship is the only one of its kind currently operating between mainland Phan Thiet city and Phu Quy island.
Nguyen Thanh Nhanh, Director of the Hung Phat Trade and Service Joint Stock Company – owner of the boat, said the three-storey steel facility is 44.7 metres long and 7.8 metres wide. It is able to run at a speed of 20 nautical miles per hour, shortening the travel time between Phan Thiet and Phu Quy to 3.5 hours.
The ship was built by the Ha Long Shipbuilding Joint Stock Company at a cost of 55 billion VND (2.42 million USD), he added. Before the ship’s inauguration, there were only three ships carrying passengers between the two destinations, unable to satisfy the travel need of locals and tourists. It also took up to six hours to cover the 56-nautical-mile distance.-VNA
