Hanoi (VNA) – President Vo Van Thuong has signed a decision to commute the deathpenalty to life in prison for five convicts.
Thedecision was inked on February 6, following recommendations from the ChiefJustice of the Supreme People's Court, the Prosecutor General of the SupremePeople's Procuracy, and the head of the President's Office, in accordance withconstitutional and legal provisions.
Byreducing the penalty for the individuals whose sentences have already takenlegal effect, the President's act demonstrates the compassionate policy ofthe Party and State towards those who have committed grave crimes. It offersthem a chance to live, repent, and rehabilitate for a chance to reintegrateinto society./.
Hanoi’s public security units are now ready to carry out the amnesty round on the occasion of National Day (September 2), as all necessary preparations had been completed by August 29.
