Da Nang (VNA) - Typhoon Trami, the sixth to hit the East Sea this year, made landfall in the central localities of Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang and Quang Nam at about 1 pm on October 27, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the maximum wind speed near the center of the storm reached level 8 (62-74 km per hour), with gusts up to level 10.
Gales pulled down many trees on Da Nang streets, including Quang Trung and Nguyen Van Linh. Roofs of some buildings were also blown off, exposing structures and objects inside.
In Thua Thien-Hue, storm surges caused water to invade Phu Thuan commune of Phu Vang district. Sea level rose by around 0.5 m, and waves have eroded the banks 50 m into the land over the past few days.
From the night of October 26 to the afternoon of October 27, the localities from Ha Tinh to Quang Nam experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall. The total rainfall recorded by 1 pm on October 27 ranged from 100 to 250 mm, with some areas exceeding 400 mm.
It is forecast that by 1 am on October 28, the storm will move southwest and then southeast at a speed of 3-5 km per hour, weakening into a tropical depression over land in Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, and Da Nang. The wind speed will be at level 6, with gusts up to level 8.
The meteorological agency warned of a high risk of flooding in low-lying coastal areas, as well as the possibility of dyke and embankment erosion along the coast from Quang Tri to Quang Nam.
