Vietnam, Lao, Cambodia courts seek to combat crimes

Khanh Hoa (VNA) – Thefourth court conference of border provinces of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia istaking place in Nha Trang city, the central province of Khanh Hoa from December20-21, attracting 120 chief judges, judges and court officials.

In his opening speech, Chief Judge ofthe Supreme People’s Court Nguyen Hoa Binh noted that globalisation, extensiveglobal integration, and growing trade and investment partnerships will increasetrans-national crimes, trade conflicts and other civil issues in number andcomplexity.

Therefore, close collaborationbetween the three countries’ courts in effectively settling trans-national disputesin civil matters and combating crimes is crucial, he said.

Chief Judge of the Supreme People’sCourt of Cambodia Dith Munty, for his part, said the trilateral courtcooperation in accordance with the United Nations Convention againstTrans-National Organised Crime will bring better lives to local residents.

Meanwhile, his Lao counterpart KhamphanSitthidampha also spoke highly of the effective and practical ties betweencourts of the three countries, especially that of border localities, over thepast years, saying they have fostered friendship, solidarity and traditionalcooperation.

Participants discussed the outcomesof the implementation of the joint statement adopted at the previous conferencesince 2014, building bilateral and trilateral cooperation mechanisms, improvingthe efficiency of trials on drug, human, wildlife and weapon trafficking and moneylaundering cases.

They also shared experience inhandling civil cases and those regarding marriage and family in particular.

The biennial conference, initiated byVietnam, took place for the first time in 2010 and was later held alternatelyin the three countries./.
