Jakarta (VNA) – IndonesianPresident Joko Widodo on February 1 inaugurated state-owned sharia bank BankSyariah Indonesia (BSI), which had total assets of 240 trillion IDR (17 billionUSD) and ranked seventh on the list of biggest banks in Indonesia based ontotal assets.

At a virtual press conference, Widodo saidit a historic day for the development of the country's sharia economy. Heopined that Indonesia had long been renowned as the country with the largestMuslim population in the world.

With more than 1,200 branch offices andover 20,000 employees, the country’s largest sharia bank is the merger of threestate-owned ones.

Its President Director Hery Gunardi said hewas ready to usher the newly-inaugurated bank into the world’s top 10 shariabanks in terms of market capitalisation in the next five years.

He said that the task is not only to mergethese banks, but also conducting transformation, which would take place in the formof business process improvement, risk management strengthening, human resourcesdevelopment and digital technology advancement./.
