Indonesia, Malaysia join hands in drug combat

Police officers from Indonesia and Malaysia have gathered at a meeting in the Indonesian province of West Nusa Tenggara from November 7-9 to discuss cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.

Jakarta (VNA) – Police officers from Indonesia and Malaysia have gathered ata meeting in the Indonesian province of West Nusa Tenggara from November 7-9 todiscuss cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.

The meeting, the 11th of its kind, was held by the Indonesia National Police'sCriminal Investigation Department and the Royal Malaysian Police (CID).

The two sides agreed to improve cooperation inexchange of information and data, including on new types of drugs that have notyet entered Indonesia, said Police Crime Department Chief General Inspector AriDono Sukmanto.

He underlined the significance of thecooperation for the Indonesian government, especially in efforts to fightdrugs, which are viewed as a transnational threat.

The two sides also discussed the impact of thePhilippine Government’s war on drugs, affirming that with extreme pressure inthe Philippines, there is a high likelihood of drug dealing syndicates enteringMalaysia and Indonesia.

CID called on authorities of the two nations towork more closely with each other, with a focus on small-scale cooperation anddrug fighting at local levels.

The department also underlined the need forregional cooperation in addressing drug trafficking.-VNA
