Korean President Moon Jae-in pays state visit to Myanmar

Myanmar and the Republic of Korea (RoK) on September 3 signed five agreements in Myanmar's capital of Nay Pyi Taw during Korean President Moon Jae-in’s state visit to the Southeast Asian country.

Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar and the Republic of Korea (RoK) on September 3 signed fiveagreements in Myanmar's capital of Nay Pyi Taw during Korean President MoonJae-in’s state visit to the Southeast Asian country.

The agreementsinclude a deal on loan framework for cooperation in economic development from2018-2022 and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the establishment of aninformation centre in Yangon to facilitate the RoK’s investment in Myanmar.

The two sidesalso signed three other MoUs on cooperation in shipping line, upgradingshipyards, transport and construction and management in the docks; science andtechnology; and emerging businesses and innovation sector.

Before thesigning ceremony, Myanmar President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung SanSuu Kyi had separate meetings with the Korean President.

Theirdiscussions focused on measures to promote friendly ties and cooperation ininvestment, economy, agriculture, construction, transportation, culturalexchange, human resources development, establishment of RoK-Myanmar industrialcomplex, industrial sector development and development of tourism industry.

They alsoexchanged views on peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, businessopportunities between the two countries in line with the RoK’s “New SouthernPolicy”, creating more employment opportunities for Myanmar guest workers inthe East Asian country, and protection of their labour rights and peacemakingefforts in Myanmar.

On September 2, KoreanPresident Moon Jae-in arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, and held talks with ThaiPrime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on enhancing the bilateral cooperation tofoster new growth momentum. He is the first leader of the RoK to visit theThailand and Myanmar in seven years.

After Myanmar,Moon is set to pay a state visit to Laos, making him the first Korean leader todo so. He will meet with Lao Party General Secretary and President BounnhangVorachith and Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith.-VNA
