Hanoi (VNA) - Malaysia’sown security standards will dictate which companies take part in its planned 5Grollout this year, Malaysian Minister of Communications and Multimedia GobindSingh Deo said on February 17.
Huawei, one of the world’s largesttelecommunications equipment makers, has been at the centre of a US-ledcampaign to clamp down on the use of Chinese technology in the development ofthe next-generation telecommunications platform because of concerns theequipment could be used by China for spying.
However, the company denied the charges.
Malaysia has been aware of the concerns that have been expressedaround the world about Huawei, but it will be governed by its own securitystandards in choosing partners for the nationwide 5G rollout planned for thethird quarter, Deo said.
Malaysia has its own safety standards and requirements, theminister stressed, adding that whoever deals with Malaysia or comes up withproposals, the country has to be sure they meet the security standards that itneeds.
The sameday, Thailand’s authorities said the country had raised more than 3.2 billion USDin an auction of 5G licences, as operators race to snap up high-frequencyspectrums needed for a commercial rollout of the next-generation technology.
