Bangkok (VNA) – The Thai Government will press ahead with its20-year housing development master plan to provide housing for low-income earnersnationwide, Deputy Prime Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said on October 10.
He was speaking while presiding over the launch of an event marking WorldHabitat Day 2019 on the day.
The 20-year master plan (2017-2036), summitted by the SocialDevelopment and Human Security Ministry, was approved in principle by thecabinet on September 12, 2017.
The plan is aimed at addressing housing problems which affect about 3 millionlow-income households nationwide.
Under the plan, the National Housing Authority is responsible for developinghousing for sale or hire-purchase for 2 million households under projects suchas the Baan Ua-Athorn housing estate, while the Community OrganisationsDevelopment Institute (CODI), a public organisation, is responsible forassisting 1 million low-income earners get access to housing.
One of its main projects is the Baan MankongScheme for low-income people.
Maitri Inthusut, chairman of CODI, said that more than 100,000 households havebeen provided with housing under the Baan Mankong Scheme while the institutehas also helped repair homes belonging to about 40,000 families of low-incomepeople in rural areas.
The Thai Deputy PM said the Government has come up with a solution for thosefacing housing insecurity, such as communities who are facing eviction fromState Railway of Thailand (SRT) owned plots and those from areas earmarked forrail development projects.
The affected communities can request the use of state land belonging to otherstate agencies and state enterprises with CODI acting as the go-between to helpthem, he added./.
