Nguyen Chi Vinh (Photo: VNA) Seoul (VNA) – A delegation of theVietnamese Ministry of National Defence has voiced its support for the Republicof Korea (RoK)’s ties with ASEAN, both bilaterally and multilaterally,affirming that this relationship will bring peace, stability and development toboth sides.
The delegation, led by Deputy Defence MinisterSen. Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh, paid a working visit to the RoK from September12 to 14 to attend an ASEAN-RoK deputy defence ministerial meeting and theseventh Seoul Defence Dialogue.
Deputy Minister Vinh told the Vietnam NewsAgency that the RoK Government is implementing its New Southern Policy, inwhich the ASEAN is a very important partner. It attaches importance tobilateral relations with each ASEAN member country, as well as multilateralconnections with all members of the bloc.
At the deputy defence ministers’ meeting, theRoK expressed its hope that ASEAN will hold a critical position in theimplementation of the New Southern Policy – including in politics, diplomacy,economy, and defence-military – so as to achieve the common goal of sustainablepeace in the region. It also called for the 10 ASEAN members to support its newpolicy.
Vietnam has strong economic, diplomatic andpolitical links with the RoK, so the latter also looks forwards to Vietnam’ssupport, he said.
Meanwhile, this year’s Seoul Defence Dialoguefocused on how to build sustainable peace in Northeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific.Officials from 51 countries and leading military-defence scientists from aroundthe world attended this event.
At the dialogue, the Vietnamese delegationhighlighted cooperation to ensure marine security, noting that issues relatingto this matter need to be solved by peaceful measures on the basis ofinternational law, Vinh said.
He added that the Vietnamese side’s speechattracted attention and support from many foreign officials and researchers.
He emphasised that the country’s viewpoint onsecurity, including maritime security, has been consistent despite situationalchanges. In particular, it has to ensure that it safeguards nationalsovereignty and security, pays attention to the security of the region andother nations, adheres to international law, and does not use or threaten touse force to solve conflicts.
Vietnam also demands the international communityto behave in the same manner, the officer noted, adding that its consistentstance received great global support.
Aside from participating in the twoaforementioned events, the Vietnamese delegation also met with high-rankingofficials of the RoK Ministry of National Defence to review bilateralcooperation and prepare for a defence policy dialogue between the twocountries’ deputy ministers in Hanoi this December.
Vinh said the RoK has cooperated with Vietnam invarious fields and that this partnership has proven effective. The two sideshave also worked together to ensure defence and contribute towards peace andstability.
Recently, a naval ship from the RoK visited DaNang city – an event which received good feedback from the public in bothVietnam and the RoK, as well as the wider region. Vietnam will also sendvessels to a naval parade in the RoK next month.
The two sides agreed that in the bilateralstrategic partnership, defence cooperation must always be one of the key pillarsto enhance mutual trust, he added.
During their stay in the RoK, the Vietnamesedelegation also had working sessions with RoK post-war settlement agencies, theforeign ministry, and the Korea International Cooperation Agency.
The Deputy Minister said Vietnam had thanked theRoK for its assistance in addressing war consequences. The RoK recentlyprovided Vietnam with 20 million USD in non-refundable aid to solve unexplodedordnance problems in Binh Dinh, Quang Binh and some other provinces. It hasalso helped improve Vietnam’s capacity of settling war consequences.
Additionally, the RoK’s support at internationalforums is particularly important as it affirms that although Vietnam is awar-torn nation but, with the international community’s assistance, the countryhas made active efforts to address those consequences, Vinh noted.–VNA
