Hanoi (VNA)𝔉 – Crowds of people gathered in front of President Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi on the morning of August 19 to witness the national flag-hoisting ceremony that marked 80 years since the victory of the August Revolution in 1945.
The August Revolution of 1945 was a defining milestone in the nation’s history, opening a new era – that of national independence associated with socialism. From slavery, the Vietnamese people rose to become masters of their country and their destiny. Eight decades on, Vietnam has overcome numerous challenges to emerge as a nation with growing strength, deepening international integration, and an increasingly recognised role and reputation on the global stage.

The flag-raising ceremony at Ba Dinh Square is a national ritual. Since May 19, 2001, it has been performed daily at sunrise, regardless of weather conditions.
Proposed as a tribute to the country’s great leader, the ritual was approved by the Government in 2001, coinciding with the 111th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s birth. As a solemn national tradition, the ceremony draws citizens and international visitors alike, particularly during national holidays and major anniversaries./.
The victory of the August Revolution was not only a great turning point that ended the colonial–feudal regime, but also a revolution for humanity, for the right to life, the right to freedom, and the right to pursue happiness. It marked the beginning of a new era: the era of national independence closely linked with socialism.
A Cuban journalist has expressed his admiration for Vietnam, a nation with a millennia-old history, marked by the struggles of its people for independence and freedom after centuries of resisting foreign invasions, from Japanese fascists and French colonialists to American imperialists.
The August Revolution of 1945 was the result of the clear-sighted leadership of the Indochinese Communist Party and leader Nguyen Ai Quoc – Ho Chi Minh, as well as the unity, determination and sacrifices of the Vietnamese people. It opened a new chapter in the nation’s history: “National independence associated with socialism”, a resounding victory of historical and global significance in the 20th century.
The exhibition vividly demonstrated the spirit of great national solidarity through rich and diverse content, highlighting the principle that the people are the foundation and the true makers of history, according to the PM.
Taking place over 19 days, the exhibition was a highlight of celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day. It not only reviewed milestones of the past eight decades but also inspired patriotism, national pride, and aspirations for sustainable growth and integration.
The moves were made in response to an appeal from the Vietnam Red Cross Society, marking the 65th anniversary of Vietnam – Cuba diplomatic relations (December 2, 1960–2025) and highlighting the enduring solidarity between the two nations.
A representative of the Vietnam Farmers’ Union expressed her hope that FAO will continue to accompany Vietnam in promoting high-tech and environmentally friendly agriculture, delivering tangible benefits to farmers.
The close attention and guidance from Party and State leaders, the encouragement from central and local agencies, along with the trust from both domestic and international press agencies and the public have formed a tremendous source of motivation for VNA journalists to fulfil their mission as the nation’s key multimedia wire service and a strategic and trusted information centre of the Party and the State.
